What got you interested in working as a speech therapist?
I did an observation at a children’s hospital not knowing anything about speech therapy. I just fell in love in that instant with what I observed and just knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life! What got me interested in working with FRPT? Answer = Kayla Hunley.
What do you love most about being a speech therapist?
My favorite thing about being an ST is working with the “littles” and parents being so appreciative. Well, any age really. It’s such a satisfying feeling knowing you made a difference in someone’s life. I try not to cry (happy tears) when parents/caregivers express their gratitude.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Volunteering at the humane society, fostering kittens, gardening, and hiking.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
From when I was 4 years old til about 17 years old, I was a traditional Korean dancer and performed at community events. My mother is Korean and has been a dancer since she was a teen. She came to America and taught children and adults Korean dancing. She still teaches, as it’s been 30+ years, and performs in churches, nursing homes, and other community events (festivals, etc.).
What is your favorite activity to encourage learning and growth with kids?
My favorite activity is to tell parents to take their children to the zoo and label everything for them! My other go-to, is to have their child “help put away groceries” by having them follow directions and be exposed to actions/prepositions/attributes (e.g. “Put the red apples in the bowl,” “Take the bananas and put on the table,” etc.).
Is there anything else you want to share?
I just completed my first 14er and I love everything about Colorado = dogs, breweries, outdoor activities, food trucks, and farmer markets!
