What got you interested in working as a speech therapist?
As early as elementary school, I always wanted to help other students who needed additional support or friendship. I eventually was a teacher’s assistant in high school for the special education class and would help the students get to their therapies. I learned about speech therapy and the difference it could make in the lives of students and from then on, it had always felt like my calling.
What do you love most about being a speech therapist?
One of my favorite memories as a speech therapist was witnessing one of my patients, who was nonverbal when we started therapy together, use words to communicate with his mom for the first time. Watching the joy and emotion between my patient and his mom is something I will never forget.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love to spend time with my family, my husband, and my dogs. I enjoy going for walks, going to the gym, going to new fun restaurants with friends, traveling, and spending time with my loved ones. I also really love to read!
What is something most people don’t know about you?
I really enjoy creating art and being crafty. I have such a creative side that I don’t often take advantage of, but when I do, it fills me with so much joy!
What is your favorite activity to encourage learning and growth with kids?
I always encourage my families to read together. Reading together doesn’t always have to mean reading the words of the book. It can mean looking at the pictures, asking questions, making predictions, describing what you see, talking about how the characters feel, and so much more! Kids can learn SO much from looking at books with their grown ups..
Is there anything else you want to share?
I feel the absolute luckiest that I found FRPT and I am so grateful to be part of such an amazing team!
